Wildcards

If you have a letter you are unsure of try using the wildcards _ or *.

• n_ _ wich - will find "Norwich". One _ equates to one letter.
• thread* - matches "Threadneedle St" for example. One * will match one or more letters.

You can use more than one wildcard in a search and they can be mixed.

• c_ _k - matches "Cork"
• *c_ _k* - matches "Blindcrake" and so on.

For something that might be abbreviated employ the * wildcard.

• albany st* - will match "Albany St." and "Albany Street" if either exist.
• st*john* - will find "St.Johns", "St Johns" and "St.John's" and so on.

Records

If you click on any of your results you will be taken to a page for that record. As time goes on, images will be shown here. If you click the globe it will attempt to take you to a Google Map - some records it will have trouble with until further editing.

Submissions

Registered members can upload a suggested image and caption on any record page.

You will also be able to upload a CSV file with your post office/postmarks submissions listed in it. I will try to attend to these as soon as possible

Here is a template to use in your favourite spreadsheet software - just make sure you export/save it as comma separated values (.csv) format.

Here is an explanation of the headings.

• OFFICE - the name of the office as it appears on the postmark.
• NO - if there is the old-style 1844 numeral, put it here.
• COUNTY - fill in this field if the county is known.
• OTHER - use this field when there is not a COUNTY - eg Travelling Post Offices (TPO).
• COUNTRY - the country.
• TOWN - the town or city of the cancel, may be the same as the office.
• POSTCODE - if the postcode of the post office is known.
• NOTES - any brief notes to be added to the record.

If a field is not known or needed, then please just leave it blank.
